Random Thoughts, Site Updates, What's going on? Tidy-Up, Drag-Racer and Other Randomness

Righto, lets try and keep this post as short as possible (I plan to code some stuff after this and need all the time I can get).

To help with this, lets use the almighty BULLET POINT :)

  • Firstly, you’ll notice I’m using a “cleaner” more professional looking and easier to use theme.
  • I updated the photo’s section, for some reason it had lost the link with facebook and wasnt sync-ing properly
  • Drag Racer – Basically, Groomi told me that if I mention it over here he would mention ScreenStamp! on his blog and because I’m too lazy to give it a post of it’s own I’ll integrate it into this one :) -  The game consists of buying and tuning cars and racing them against your friends, its a good little app and is available on Facebook @ http://apps.facebook.com/drag_racer
  • openSUSE – After trial of many many different operating systems, my Netbook now has openSUSE on it and is working great, it wasnt the easiest OS to install due to the Aspire not having a CD Drive but if anyone wants a step by step guide to getting it working drop me a line – I’m also thinking of putting an extra 1GB RAM into it.

Thats all for now, I’m going to be helping out with a site recode for a friend over the next few months; so keep an eye out for tutorials and snippets of code I write that I think might be useful to others will be posted here.

Projects, What's going on? ScreenStamp!

Hey all, just a quick post regarding a little application that myself, 1337speak and ethicalhack3r have developed to aid us in information gathering exercises: ScreenStamp! I cannot think of a better way to explain it than what is written on the official website, so here it goes:

What is ScreenStamp! going to do?

When ScreenStamp! has been fully developed for the release of the BETA version, it will once run ask you for a location to save your screen shots to, along with a name that the program will number, allowing the user to concentrate on the job at hand as a pose to saving screen shots.ScreenStamp! will also time and date stamp the screen shot at the top right hand corner.

Where did the ScreenStamp! idea come from?

When myself and my work group at University, where we are studying Ethical Hacking for Computer Security were carrying out an Information Gathering exercise the task of taking and saving screen shots with the clock opened and date showing was becoming really boring, so myself and a couple of other group members decided that and application that would do this for us would be well worth the time spent on creating one, after we had looked at failed to fins an application that did exactly what we had in mind.

I urge you all to go try it out and let us know what you think and of any bugs you find, it is available for both windows and linux with the possibility of Mac version coming soon (although the linux version may work on Mac??)

You can find out more and download @ http://www.screenstamp.co.uk

What's going on? Acer Aspire One

Right then, I forgot to update you all on my Netbook which I got around to buying (I think I mentioned my intention in a post further down).

I decided to go with the Acer Aspire One Netbook to use for writing notes and surfing inlectures. Its 8.9in and 1kg so its nice and easy to carry around and the keyboard isnt so small that its impossible to type – I’m getting quite used to it now. So anyway here are the specs:

RAM 512MB (Upgradeable to 1.5GB but the process of adding RAM looks a little fiddly and requires total disassembly of the unit.

Hard Drive says 120GB on the box but comes out at 150GB (not quite sure why – perhaps it had a 30GB hidden recovery partition??)

Comes with a watered down version of Linux (which I never actually used) I committed the eternal sin and installed windows on it *shock* this was mainly because of the weird security set-up on the Wireless here being tedious to configure with linux and I wanted to get going as soon as I could.

In getting windows on it I followed this tutorial – http://www.eeeguides.com/2007/11/installing-windows-xp-from-usb-thumb.html based on a EEEPc but the process of getting XP on the thumb-drive to begin with is the important bit.

So thats my Netbook :)

Site Updates Yet another new theme

I thought this theme was cool with its vista style imitation so I thought I’d try it out for a few days and see what people think, you can change the style of it by clicking on the “Start” Button (pencil at the bottom) and choosing change theme. There are some other cool things you can do from that menu too. As with all the other theme changes, comments are appreciated.

Random Thoughts, Site Updates, What's going on? Stueybot and other things

I know what you’re thinking: 2 posts in 2 days, this surely cant last long? Well hopefully it will :) the reason for this blog is that I was given today a backup of CPB-Network.org which was taken in May 2008. For those of you who do not know: CPB-Network was the name under whichme and Stu most recently ran our webhosting and development business, however in early 2008 we decided to focus on software development and website design rather than hosting.

The idea was never really rolled out on a big scale because of the events that were to follow and the subsequent closing of the business. It was nice though to look back and see what could have been and delve into some old code.

From what I remember (and can see from the backup) I was working on a new client backend for the website, whilst at the same time designing a website with Stu for a customer. Stu was fiddling with the idea of building a mafia based RPG and was rebuilding an old version of Asgard to suit. And we were both working on an MSN Bot written in PHP based on the Blobsy Framework (affectionately or arrogantly named: Stueybot).

Looking back: one of the reasons why very few of our projects ever caught on was probably due to us never really investing 100% effort into each one and being of the mindset; if I do 500 things one of them will work.

Anyway, I guess this is a random blog but I hope you enjoyed the nice little history lesson and are a little wiser as to what I was doing more than a year ago. I might at some stage rewirte an MSN Bot depending on the extent of my boredom – perhaps in C this time?

Meanwhile I finally got around to upgrading to WP 2.7.1 and I have to see I quite like the new interface :)

Random Thoughts, What's going on? Rising up from the ashes

Well, I’ve secided its time to shift the tumble-weed away from this site and start blogging again. I’m so undermotivted to ever log on and write anything as I fail to see why you out there would be interested in my life (as exciting as it is).

I’ve also been very busy with bits and bobs in uni – Assignments and the odd drinking binge :)

I’ll try my best to post more often (I say that a lot) but I’ll just start posting any random random cr*p.

Recently I have installed Fedora Core 10 on my laptop – originally in KDE but now on Gnome and it dual boots with vista, The only thing I am annoyed about is that there isnt a Linux Driver for the DisplyaLink DL-160 Chip inside my docking station so my dual monitors dont work – but I was thinking of scrapping dual monitors anyway to save some desk space.

Elsewhere but sorta related I was thinking about rebuilding my laptop totally to use FC as its’ primary operating system (perhaps running VMWare with XP inside – for those moments when you need windows). My reasons for thinking this are that my course at uni is swaying toward linux and I feel i should “turn to the dark-side”. I’m personally starting to see how stable linux can be and how it can do almost everything windows can and sometimes a lot more.

As I only have the laptop here (at uni) another thought was that I get a netbook – something easy to carry from class to class which gives the oppurtunity to leave my laptop static on the desk, But I dont really know if I can justify it as at home I have more computers than sense.

In other news, I really want an IPhone and cant wait until my current contract ends (in October) to get one – I might have to call 3 and enquire about paying off my contract early – does that make me impatient?

Random Thoughts More TV Commercial observations…

Hello All,

Let me start by saying Happy New Year and I hope you all had a very productive and enjoyable holiday. Now, on to topic – some of you may know that I watch way to much TV and observe adverts. Lately I’ve noticed the advert for Micro$oft Windows (as if people don’t know that exists already?) – its slogan is “Life without Walls” or words to that effect…does anyone else find that ironic since without walls we’d have no need for windows :) .

Thats all from me, very random I know

Site Updates More on Facebook…

Yes it seems I have become a facebook whore lately and I am attempting to utilise this…erm…whoreness (?) by integrating portions of my facebook profile into my blog to give it some more content (read my post on Facebook Integration for more info).

Anyway, today I have added my most recent facebook status update to the top of the menu panel :) as suggested by Groomi. You can still view lots of my recent status updates on the My Facebook page (above).

I have also added a new plugin called Fotobook which imports my photos and photos of me from facebook and displays them on this blog.

Site Updates My Blog gets all Christmassy

Well its almost christmas so in a bid to get this place into the festive spirit I have installed a christmas theme, yes its very blue and fairly busy, but it wont last forever (everything will be back to normal after xmas…seems sensible doesnt it? :) ). In the meantime just enjoy the festiveness and know that I wish you all a merry christmas and happy new year.

Craig

Edit –

I removed the Christmas theme as I disliked it and reverted back to something similar to the original. Except with Ice/Snow in the header – as it’s winter and cold
